Oconomowoc is a city built around water. Fowler Lake sits right by downtown, Lac La Belle spreads out to the west, and the Oconomowoc River ties them together. The older homes a short walk from Fowler Lake have basements that feel every change in the lakes, because the groundwater under them rises and falls with the water level. After a snowy winter, when the lakes are full and the ground is thawing, that water pushes up under the slab and seeps in along the base of the walls.
On the edges of town, newer subdivisions face a different mix. They're farther from the shore, but they sit on glacial clay that swells and holds summer storm water against the foundation. Either way, the basement gives the same signal: a damp line at the wall-floor joint, sometimes a puddle in the corner. Interior drain tile catches water at that joint.
